A report from data compiled by streaming search engine Reelgood reveals that Hulu beats Netflix based on the number of high-quality TV shows to watch.
The Reelgood report examined the number of TV series the streaming leaders have that are currently rated 8.0 or higher on IMDb. The IMDb rating metric was used to determine whether a TV series is considered high-quality or not.
The findings reported by Business Insider revealed that while streaming giant Netflix has tens of millions more subscribers, a global user base, and multiple critically acclaimed TV series, Hulu had more high-quality shows. Hulu also edged out Amazon Prime Video, HBO and Showtime. Hulu has 213 high-quality shows over Netflix's 203. Prime Video has 142 TV shows with 8.0 or higher IMDb rating while HBO and Showtime have 43 and 12, respectively.
However, Realgood data also showed that in terms of quantity, Amazon's streaming company tops the ranking with Prime Video having 2,317 shows in its TV library. Netflix comes in at second with 1,966 and Hulu ranked third with 1,931.
Talking about quality, Netflix's original shows have been garnering numerous Emmy award nominations in recent years, showing its ability to create its own quality TV series beyond its licensed content. In 2018, Netflix was able to break HBO's 17-year streak as the network with the most number of Emmy nominations.
Meanwhile, Hulu has added more to its original shows, including “Shrill,” “Pen15,” “The Act,” and “Ramy.” A sequel is currently in development for its “The Handmaid’s Tale” which won outstanding drama series in 2017.
Business Insider also determined several things from the data analysis. It concluded that Amazon Prime Video has the most "bang for buck" being the cheapest option with the most number of movies and TV shows while Hulu is actually the cheapest option albeit ads and even without ads, it still costs less than Netflix's standard HD plan.
