Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora has been dismissed over his role in the "sign-stealing" scandal during his time as Houston Astros bench coach.

Manager Alex Cora, who brought the team to a World Series win in 2018, was dismissed by the Boston Red Sox after a Major League Baseball (MLB) investigation found that he played a key role in the use of a camera to steal signs being given by catchers to pitchers in 2017.

A separate MLB investigation into the Red Sox is still ongoing.

In a statement, the Red Sox said: "This is a sad day for us. Given the findings and the commissioner's ruling, we collectively decided that it would not be possible for Alex to effectively lead the club going forward and we mutually agreed to part ways."

Meanwhile, Cora said: "I do not want to be a distraction to the Red Sox as they move forward. My two years as manager were the best years of my life. It was an honor to manage these teams and help bring a World Series championship back to Boston. This is a special place. There is nothing like it in all of baseball, and I will miss it dearly."

Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow and manager AJ Hinch were suspended by MLB for a year without pay for their role in the scandal and were eventually fired by team owner Jim Crane. MLB also fined the Astros $5 million and forced the team to surrender draft picks.

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred decided to defer any disciplinary action on Cora, who was mentioned 11 times in the nine-page report, until the ongoing investigation into the Red Sox is completed.

Cora, who spent four seasons with the Red Sox as a player, became Hinch's number two during 2017, when the Astros won the World Series. The following year, he returned to the Red Sox as manager, where he won the World Series.
