Tiger Woods has tied the record for most PGA Tour titles after winning his 82nd at the Zozo Championship in Chiba, Japan.

The 82nd PGA Tour title of Tiger Woods equals that of legendary golfer Sam Snead, who also won 82 titles in his career which lasted over 50 years. At the Zozo Championship, Woods defeated home crowd bet Hideki Matsuyama by three shots while world No. 2 rank Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland and South Korea's Sung-jae Im tied for third place.

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said: "Today, we celebrate both Tiger and Sam Snead as they share a record that, given how difficult it is to win just once on the PGA Tour, should sit squarely alongside the greatest accomplishments in sporting history."

The 43-year-old Woods expressed his happiness over the win over a tweet on Sunday and said that it an honor to be tied with fellow American Snead for the most wins. He wrote: "It’s an honor to be tied with Sam Snead for most wins in @PGATOUR history. Thanks Mom and Pop and everyone who helped make this possible. Hideki put up an amazing fight on his home soil, but to do this in Japan is something I’ll never forget. It’s been an awesome year."

In April, the former world No. 1 won his 15th major title, 11 years after his last, by clinching his fifth Masters green jacket at Augusta. The last time Woods won a green jacket was 14 years ago.

Woods' career appeared to be over after years of suffering back injuries and undergoing spinal fusion surgery in 2017.

After his win in Japan, Woods said: "If you would have asked me a few years ago, I would have given you a different answer, but certainly the future looks brighter than it has. The body can't do what it used to but I can still think my way around the golf course. I know how to play and I was able to do that this week. There was a time if I didn't know if I would play again so I am very appreciative."
