The English football club Tottenham Hotspur has announced that it hired Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho as its new head coach.

Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho was hired by the Tottenham Hotspur as its new head coach after firing former coach Mauricio Pochettino on Tuesday. Pochettino led the London-based team to the Champions League final just six months ago.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy released a statement saying: "In Jose we have one of the most successful managers in football. He has a wealth of experience, can inspire teams and is a great tactician. He has won honors at every club he has coached. We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room."

The Hotspur will be the third English Premier League club Mourinho coaches for his career. He previously managed Chelsea twice and most recently Manchester United. He has also led FC Porto and Inter Milan to success in Europe's Champions League, as well as Spain's Real Madrid, where he won the league title and the Copa del Rey.

Mourinho said: "I am excited to be joining a club with such a great heritage and such passionate supporters. The quality in both the squad and the academy excites me. Working with these players is what has attracted me."

Last season, Pochettino was able to lead the Spurs on a remarkable run to the Champions League final before losing 2-0 to Liverpool in Madrid. However, this season, the team has only been able to score 14 points in 12 league games, falling to 14th place in the 20-team league.

Levy said: "Mauricio and his coaching staff will always be part of our history. I have the utmost admiration for the manner in which he dealt with the difficult times away from a home ground whilst we built the new stadium and for the warmth and positivity he brought to us."
