In recent years, he has been battling primary progressive aphasia, a rare form of dementia that affects speech. According to a statement from his family, he passed away Saturday evening with his wife by his side.

The statement said: "Over the past few days his wife, children, extended family and many close friends have been constantly with Terry as he gently slipped away at his home in North London."

It continued: "We have all lost a kind, funny, warm, creative and truly loving man whose uncompromising individuality, relentless intellect and extraordinary humor has given pleasure to countless millions across six decades."

Jones played various roles in the surrealistic comedy troupe, including several female characters. He played as Brian's mother in their classic 1979 satire on religion and popularized the line, "He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy!"

He later wrote historical non-fiction books and hosted several documentaries after the group disbanded in the 1980s. Among his works is the screenplay for David Bowie's 1986 fantasy film "Labyrinth".

"His work with Monty Python, his books, films, television programs, poems and other work will live on forever, a fitting legacy to a true polymath. We hope that this disease will one day be eradicated entirely," the statement added.

His "Monty Python" co-star Michael Palin said: "Terry was one of my closest, most valued friends. He was kind, generous, supportive and passionate about living life to the full."
