Ford has unveiled a fully electric Mustang with more than 900 horsepower at Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas on Wednesday.

While it's not for sale, Ford said it showcased the electric Mustang in Las Vegas to gauge interest in high-performance electric cars. The automobile company calls the show car the Mustang Lithium.

Later in November, Ford will launch a "Mustang inspired" electric SUV that will be available to customers but will likely be far less powerful than the Mustang Lithium. While Ford did not divulge exact performance details for the customized car, it described its acceleration as "stunning".

Mustang Lithium and its features

Ford created the Mustang Lithium with the help of automotive parts supplier Webasto. It features a  six-speed manual transmission, which is unusual in an electric car because electric cars don't actually need a transmission with more than one speed.

The show car's transmission is a special heavy-duty transmission designed to handle the 1,000 foot-pounds of torque. According to Ford, the Mustang Lithium is powered by an 800-volt power system, which is more than double of what current electric cars have.

The electric car offers four driving modes, Sport, Track, Beast and Valet, which can be used when you have to hand someone else the key. Its hood features two small clear polycarbonate panels that enable people to see the battery pack and electric motor underneath.

Aside from the aforementioned electric SUV, Ford is also developing an all-electric version of its F-150 pickup. Ford executives pointed out that they started out the electric vehicle rollout with models tied to its most famous brands, the Mustang and F-150, in order to have the greatest impact.

The SEMA event serves as an industry trade show for companies that make add-on parts for cars and trucks. At the 2018 SEMA show, a 700-horsepower electric Camaro was unveiled by General Motors.
