Taylor Swift toppled her own record of having the largest week of album sales in the U.S. after her latest album, Lover, sold 867,000 equivalent units. The last album to achieve a similar milestone was Swift’s previous album, reputation, which sold 1.238 million units in its first week.
With Lover, Swift sealed her sixth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 and her sixth in a row. According to Billboard, the figure Lover achieved covers 679,000 of album sales; 13,000 were in TEA (track equivalent album) units.
Swift is the first woman to have six different albums each sell 500,000 copies in a single week. She also ties Lady Gaga for the female artists with the most No. 1's this decade.
In addition, Swift ties with Beyonce for the most consecutive albums by a female artist to reach the Billboard 200 No. 1 debut.
U.S. retailer Target confirmed that Lover is the best-selling music pre-order of all time, beating Swift's own record in 2017 with reputation. Meanwhile, Amazon announced that Lover "broke global records as the top album debut in the history of Amazon Music."
First time across streaming platforms
Lover earned 175,000 SEA (streaming equivalent album) units, which translates to 226 million on-demand audio streams during its release week. Billboard reported that Swift now holds the second-biggest streaming week ever for an album by a woman, the second-largest for a pop album, and the second-biggest of any album this year.
This is the first time Swift made her album available across all streaming platforms. The digital edition of her last album, reputation, was only available via the Apple iTunes Store.
New global records set
Swift's Lover has also broken records worldwide. The pop star debuts at number one in the UK, with 53,000 equivalent units sold in the first week.
The Archer singer becomes the only artist this decade to have five number-one albums in Australia. Lover also lands number one on the New Zealand Official Top 40 Album Chart.
The 18-track album grabs the top spot on 11 Official Album Charts around the world, including Belgium, Canada, Mexico, Sweden, and Norway. Swift made headlines when Lover hit one million sales in China.
